Signs and graffiti are fascinating subjects to photograph. There’s no shortage of public hoardings, banners, posters, billboards and writings telling us where we are or where to go. They urge us to buy, vote, believe, laugh, even think. Ironically, the sign or graffiti may itself be an object of interest, amusement or even beauty by virtue of its intrinsic qualities. I often choose to photograph signs or graffiti within the context of their environment because it can lyrically reinforce the message or unintentionally distort the intended meaning.
