Tobacco Kilns of the High Country

While visiting the Victorian alpine region for the first time in 2008, I became fascinated by a number of very unusual-looking sheds I saw as I travelled around. Many were dilapidated while others had been restored and converted to other uses. Without knowing their original purpose, they were aesthetically appealing so I decided to find out what they were and return and photograph them. The sheds were in fact tobacco kilns, relics from a now-defunct local industry. Spending time photographing them and meeting and talking with people who’d been involved in local tobacco cultivation was an informative and rewarding experience
